Keep paper centred, water on your brush-hand side, paint within easy reach and a cloth nearby.

A clear area slightly larger than the paper plus room for paint and water is enough.

One jar can handle the first rinse and the second can provide cleaner water.

Choose stable, wide containers that are difficult to tip and easy to distinguish from drinking cups.

A board should be flat, water-resistant, lightweight and larger than the paper.

An easel is optional because many watercolor painters work flat or at a slight angle.

Bright indirect daylight or a neutral high-colour-rendering lamp helps colours look consistent.

Use a waterproof mat, vinyl cloth or wipeable board under the entire setup.

Store a compact palette, brushes, cloth, pencil and small paper in one handled box or tray.

Adjust chair height, support the painting board and keep frequently used items inside a relaxed reach.
